The Old City, also known as the historic Sultanahmet area, is a treasure trove of culinary delights. Its cobblestone streets and bustling markets hold the secrets of recipes passed down through generations. From Ottoman palaces to vibrant bazaars, this area has been the culinary heart of Istanbul for centuries. This tour is more than just food—it’s a deep dive into the soul of a city that has influenced and been influenced by diverse cultures throughout history.
Our carefully designed tour blends history, culture, and gastronomy to offer you an unforgettable experience. Here’s a glimpse of what awaits:
A Warm Welcome with Turkish Tea
Begin your journey in true Turkish style with a steaming glass of çay (Turkish tea). Sipped in small tulip-shaped glasses, Turkish tea is more than a drink; it’s a symbol of hospitality and connection. Enjoy it as you get acquainted with your guide and fellow food enthusiasts.
The Streets of Sultanahmet
Stroll through the historic streets where Byzantine and Ottoman architecture coexist harmoniously. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating stories about the landmarks you pass, including the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace. These iconic sites set the stage for the culinary adventure ahead.
Traditional Turkish Breakfast Treats
No Turkish food tour is complete without sampling a simit—a sesame-encrusted bread ring often referred to as Turkey’s version of a bagel. Pair it with local cheeses, olives, and jam for a light yet satisfying start to your culinary journey.
The Spice Bazaar Experience
Step into the aromatic world of the Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı). Here, colorful displays of saffron, sumac, and dried fruits create a feast for the senses. Your guide will introduce you to the art of selecting the perfect spice blend and may even share tips for recreating Turkish flavors at home.
Meze and Raki in a Local Tavern
Dive into the world of meze, an assortment of small dishes bursting with flavor. Enjoy delights such as hummus, stuffed grape leaves, and ezme (spicy tomato and pepper dip). Pair these with a glass of raki, an anise-flavored spirit often called “lion’s milk,” for an authentic Turkish dining experience.
Iconic Street Foods
Istanbul’s streets are alive with culinary creativity, and you’ll get to taste some of the best street foods the Old City has to offer. Sample crispy börek (flaky pastry filled with cheese or meat), flavorful kebabs, and piping-hot balık ekmek (grilled fish sandwich) by the Galata Bridge.
Sweet Endings
Satisfy your sweet tooth with classic Turkish desserts. Relish the layers of flaky pastry in baklava, filled with pistachios or walnuts and drenched in syrup. Savor the chewy goodness of lokum (Turkish delight), available in a variety of flavors from rose to pomegranate.
Coffee Culture at its Best
Conclude your journey with a cup of Türk kahvesi (Turkish coffee), prepared in the traditional manner. Learn about the art of fortune-telling with coffee grounds—a fun and mystical way to end your day.
